Immediately after the creation of Yobe State, the then Yobe state Government appereciated the need to improve the condations and quality of education, particully technical  education in the state. In consenance    with this thinking, a decision was taken towords the end of 1992 to establish a Yobe State polytechnic and to be located in Damaturu, the State Capital.

While neccessary facilities and personnel were being put in place for the take-off of the state polytechnic, the federal government notified  the state government it’s decision to establish a federal polytechnic Damaturu was establish in may 1993.

The state under the leadership of governor Bukar Abba Ibrahim (FNIQS) FNIAE found it necessary to establish a state polytechnic along-side the federal polytechnic particully to provide for studies, training, research and development of techniques in applied science, engineering, management and commence as well as other spheres of learning such as biotechnology, solar energy studies, leather  technology, publishing studies, desert studies and petroleum engineering. Hence, a bill for a law to provide for the establishing of the Yobe State polytechnic was enacted by the yobe state house of Assembly on 30th October 2002 and to be located at Geidam .

The enactment of the law followed by appointment of principal officer i.e. the Rector, Deputy Rector, Registrar, Bursar, Librarian and the Director of Works and Maintenance. Also,  a chairman of the Governing Council Yobe State Polytechnic (now Mai Idris Alooma Polytechnic)   was appointed with other members.
