Armed Forces Technical Officer Job Description

A Technical Officer In The Armed Forces May Be Responsible, Through His Or Her Team, For The Maintenance And Serviceability Of Ships, Aircraft And Land Vehicles As Well As Their Associated Weapons Systems And Support Equipment.

Technical Officers May Also Act As Project Managers On A Base Or Construction Site Or In Research And The Development Of New Equipment And Systems. In Battle, They Have Responsibility For Keeping Equipment, Infrastructure And Lines Of Communication Operational.

An Officer Is First And Foremost A Leader And Manager. They Must Lead And Manage A Team Of Specialists, Directing Them When Circumstances Demand Action And Using Their Skills And Competence.

As A Technical Officer, Your Role Will Include Not Only Management Responsibility, But Also A Considerable Extension Of Your Technical Experience To Identify, Investigate And Solve Problems. Sometimes, This Experience Will Involve Advanced Development And Applications, Such As Equipment Development With A Manufacturer.

In The Field, It Means Sorting Out Basic Problems, For Example, Providing Water Supplies, Building Bridges Or Even Setting Up A Refugee Camp And Providing All Services. In Combat, It Could Be Constructing A Helicopter Pad, Destroying A Bridge Or Clearing A Minefield. The Activities Undertaken Will Revolve Around The Command And Management Of A Team Of Specialists, Who Will Include Artisan Tradesmen, Technicians, Engineers And Other Professionals.

Armed Forces Technical Officer Duties/Functions/Responsibilities

  • keeping up to date in your specialist area and in developments of the whole of your professional technical field;
  • taking responsibility for the welfare, discipline, morale and career development of the team of technicians you manage, including training and developing staff and preparing them for promotion;
  • communicating effectively with direct reports, colleagues with other roles and responsibilities, and professional groups, through briefings, technical and operational reports and presentations.
  • keeping ships, aircraft, vehicles and/or other equipment operational, as well as infrastructure and lines of communication;
  • finding 'best possible' solutions quickly rather than spending time devising elegant and more detailed outcomes;
  • managing personnel, equipment and resources and acting as a project, production or site manager;
  • ensuring the serviceability of ships, aircraft and land vehicles, their weapons systems, and support equipment;
  • directing technical personnel, both service and civilian, to operate, maintain and repair all equipment;
  • assessing situations and identifying technical problems, investigating the causes of defects and overseeing repair;
  • preparing new or modified operational strategies and plans;
  • allocating equipment, personnel and resources effectively to solve problems and achieve missions;
  • assessing priorities, plans and maintenance routines, and liaising with external repair facilities;
  • teaching, instructing and demonstrating to staff as well as assessing the effectiveness of their training;
  • carrying out essential administration, including records, budgets and accounts;
  • acting as a consultant for all engineering matters, including fault diagnosis and operational status;
  • cooperating with designers and manufacturers on the research and development of new equipment and systems;
