Chief Hannah Idowu Dideolu Adelana-Awolowo (popularly known as HID) was born in Ikenne, Ogun State, Nigeria, on November 25th, 1915. She was a businesswoman, political motivator, and philanthropist.

The young Hannah grew up in Lagos where she attended St. Saviour’s School, Faji and Methodist Girls' High. After her secondary education, she took to business, specializing in merchandising and supplies.


Hannah Idowu Awolowo Career

Hannah was generally into organizing, motivating, and giving inspiration to Awolowo in the pursuit of his political career. She also contributed greatly to the sustenance and success of the Nigerian Tribune Group of Newspapers. She was chairman of the Obafemi Awolowo Foundation and matron, National Association of Nigerian Women in Business. She was also president and life matron, Agbeni Young Women Christian Association, Ibadan. She was grand matron, Remo Country Club.

A successful businesswoman, Hannah became the first Nigerian distributor for the Nigerian Tobacco Company (NTC) in 1957. She was the first to import lace materials and other textiles into Nigeria. 


Hannah Idowu Awolowo Personal Life

Hannah was married to Nigerian nationalist, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, from December 26th, 1937 until his death in 1987. They had several children including; Segun Awolowo, Tola Oyediran, Oluwole Awolowo, Ayodele Soyode and Tokunbo Awolowo-Dosunmu. He famously referred to her as his “jewel of inestimable value”. She is also a grandmother in-law to Nigeria's Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo. Chief Awolowo died on On September 19th, 2015, just two months to her 100th birthday and was buried in Ikenne, Ogun State, on November 25th, 2015.

  • Honorary Doctor of Civil Laws from the Obafemi Awolowo University in 1989
  • Honorary Doctor of Letters, Ogun State University, Ago-lwoye in 1997
  • She also held the chieftaincy of the Yeye Oodua of Yorubaland.
