Built by the Nigerian Baptist Commission, the University was established on 17th July 2001 and was charged with providing a well-rounded educational system to the benefit of Nigerians. It was named after Late Reverend Thomas Jefferson Bowen, an American missionary who pioneered the Baptist work in Nigeria in 1850.
