Federal Polytechnic Damaturu was established by the Federal Government of Nigeria in May 1993 by virtue of the Federal Polytechnics (Amendment No. 2) Decree of 1993. The institution took off with six academic departments which gradually expanded over the years to five academic schools comprising of 16 academic departments today.

The mission of the Polytechnic is to impart skills for self reliance and technological development.
