Senator Mao Arukwe Ohuabunwa is the senator representing Abia North Senatorial District. He was born on May 24, 1957 in the old Rivers State but his parents original came from Abia State.
Mao Ohuabunwa is 67 years old.
Mao Ohuabunwa had his primary school education at Orevo State School and later proceeded to Enitona High School where he got his WASC, and then to the College of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt where he obtained a Higher National Diploma in 1981. He then proceeded to Rivers State University of Science and Techology and graduated with a degree in Applied Biology and with major in Microbiology in 1982
Senator Ohabunwa also has a Masters in Human Resource Management from the Rivers State University of Science and Technology which he obtained in 2015.
Ohuabunwa went into business after graduation setting up a medical laboratory as well as venturing into the importation, distribution and sales of laboratory medical equipment, chemicals and reagents.
He later started a diagnostic centre in Gongola called St. Marsons Diagnostic Limited and had branches in Yola, Jalingo, Portharcourt, Lagos and Abuja.
Ohabunwa set business aside to try his hands in Nigerian politics in 1997. Following the imminent return to democracy in 1998, he ran for the Federal House of Representatives on the platform of the defunct United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP) but unfortunately due to the sudden death of General Abacha, the election was inconclusive.
In the 1999 general elections Ohabunwa contested again, this time on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) and was successful. He became the first person to represent both Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency, he went on to become the Deputy Leader of the House.
Ohuabunwa was in the House of Representatives for 8 years, from 1999 to 2007. And while there he attracted a lot of development to his constituency in the areas of water, good roads, electricity and education.
In the 2007 general elections, Ohabunwa unsuccessfully contested for the Abia North senatorial seat.
Undeterred he came back in the 2015 elections and this time was successful booking the seat to represent Abia North Senatorial District at the National Assembly.
When the election was cancelled, he still went ahead to win the re-run in March 2016.
Senator Mao is married to Lady Barr. Nimi Faith Ohuabunwa and they are blessed with children.
His philantropic disposition spurred him to set up the Mao Ohuabunwa Foundation, a platform he uses to help and reach out to the less privileged.
