Joshua Chibi Dariye was born in Horop, Mushere Chiefdom of Bokkos local government area of Plateau State, Nigeria, on July 27th, 1957. Popularly called ‘’Head Boy’’, he was a two term governor of Plateau State and currently a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Dariye grew up in Plateau State where he attended LEA Primary school Mushere between 1967 and 1973. From 1973 to 1978, he had his secondary education at Government College Makurdi, Benue State. He had his Higher National Diploma (HND) at Kaduna Polytechnic from 1978 to 1983. His postgraduate studies was at St. Clement University, Amsterdam, and his Masters in Law and Diplomacy at the University of Lagos.
After his National Youth Service in Kano (1983-1984), he joined Messer Pannel Kerr Forster as Chattered Accountant Jos, where he rose to the rank of Audit Manager. From 1988 to 1989, he was Chief Accountant at the Plateau Publishing Company Ltd, and Chief Inspector at Lion Bank from April 1989 to April1990. In 1996, he joined Benue Cement Company Plc as General Manager Finance and Admin.
In 1998, he resigned from Benue Cement Company Ltd to go into politics and joined the Defunct United Nigeria People’s Congress (UNPC) to contest for position of Governor Plateau state, following the death of Gen. Sani Abacha, GCFR, that brought an end to all political activities countrywide. In 1998, he contested on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party with 8 other contestants and defeated them to emerge the flag bearer.
The final election that saw his emergence as the Governor of Plateau state was a hot contest between him and the candidate of Alliance for Democracy (AD), and the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP). He was re-elected for a second term in 2003. His second term was marred with impeachment threats which eventually materialized on November 13th, 2006. His deputy, Michael Botmang, became the new governor. After a year of legal tussles, he was reinstated by the Supreme Court on April 27th, 2007. He was finally succeeded by Jonah Jang on May 27th, 2007. In In April 2011, he was elected Senator for Plateau Central on the Labour Party platform. In 2015, he re-contested under the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and won.
Dariye is married to Mrs. Valentina Dariye and together they have four children namly Nanle (married to Senator Ararume's daughter, Chioma), Joy, Ebenezer and Ruth.
