Enugu is the capital of Enugu state and its largest city. Located in the southeast of Nigeria, Enugu is home to the Igbo tribe. Enugu city’s population is estimated at 1,381,564 inhabitants. The city of Enugu contains three local government areas; Enugu north, Enugu east and Enugu south. Igbo and English are the majorly spoken languages while Christianity is the most widely practiced religion. Enugu city offers a wide variety of local dishes with Okpa and Abacha as the very popular ones. Hospitals found within Enugu City include the Enugu state University Teaching Hospital, Good shepherd specialist hospital, Hansa clinic, JEC Opticals, Hilton Clinics, and the St Mary's Hospital.
Enugu falls under the tropical savannah climate and its topography is characterized by several hills. The average temperature is 28 degrees centigrade while annual precipitation is estimated at 2500 mm.
The city of Enugu has two main seasons; the dry season and the rainy season with a brief cameo by the harmattan wind around December and early January. Enugu city has an average humidity level of 64 percent.
Enugu is a commercial and agrarian city. There are also enormous coal deposits in Enugu.
Popular crops cultivated in Enugu city include yams, cassava, vegetables, and oil palm. Also, markets such as the Kenyatta, Mayor, Afia nine, Abakpa, 82 Division Barracks mammy market, and Ogbete main market provide platforms for trade to be effected between traders and buyers resulting in an appreciation in the economic fortunes of the city.
Enugu city also plays host to several banks, hotels, relaxation spots, religious and educational institutions, industries, as well as several government owned establishments.
Enugu is the former capital of the old Anambra state.
