Dele Aiyenugba

Bamidele Mathew Aiyenugba was born in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria, on November 20th., 1983. He is a professional footballer who plays as a goalkeer for Hapoel Ashkelon of Israel where he has lived for over a decade, and the Nigerian national team. Though a man of average height, Aiyenuga has an elephantine confidence at foiling opposition when it comes to the inevitability of penalty shootout and he is even considered to be a notch ahead of the legendary Vincent Enyeama in this regard during their days with two-time African champions, Enyimba FC.

Aiyenugba has described himself as a bit lucky with his parents specially his dad who supported him a lot and bought him his first boot and hand gloves when he went for trials as a teenager at Kwara Stars.

Dele Aiyenugba Career

Aiyenugba began his career with Kwara Stars in 1998. The shot-stopper then joined Enyimba FC in 2001 where he won the Nigerian league four times in 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2007. Nicknamed the ‘Cat’ for his impressive composure when it comes to penalty shootout, he burst into limelight in 2003 when his penalty heroics took Enyimba to the final of the CAF Champions League where they edged out Egyptian side Ismaily before repeating the same feat a year later when Enyimba defeated Etoile du Sahel on penalties in the final in Abuja to clinch her second continental title. He also won the African Super Cup with the Aba based club in 2004 and 2005.

After six years with Enyimba, Aiyenugba signed a contract with Bnei Yehuda in the Israeli league. In 2015, he signed a new two-year contract with the Israeli Liga Leumit outfit. The goal minder made 294 appearances for Yehuda before joining another Israeli club, Hapoel Ashkelon, in 2016. 

Aiyenugba made his debut for the Nigerian national team in 2005 and has since featured 17 times. He was part of the 2010 FIFA World Cup Super Eagles squad.

Aiyenugba is married and has a teenage son, Daniel  Aiyenugba, who plays for the North Central U13 team and seems to be taking after his father's goalkeeping and penalty saving abilities. 

In 2014, it was releaved that Aiyenugba had separated from his wife, who abandoned him in Israel and returned to Nigeria. The deeply religious shot stopper is a lover of zara wears as well as Range Rover as regards automobile.
