Maarouf Youssef was born in Kwara State, Nigeria, on December 20th, 1992. He is a professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Zamalek of Egypt where he has won numerous trophies. He has a Burkina Faso lineage which explains why his name is spelt Maroof Youssef and not the typical Nigerian way.

Youssef lived his early life in Ilorin, Kwara State, where he attended the Government Secondary School and was nicknamed ‘Ewa’ alongside a guy also known as’ Kanu.’ At the age of 17, he moved to Egypt.

Maarouf Youssef Career

Youssef bgan his career with the Kwara United Feeders Team before getting promoted to the main team. He played for Kwara United in the NPFL under coach Kadiri Ikhana and started as a defender. In the 2009/10 season Sunshine hosted Kwara United in Akure. Few mins into the game the first choice left back Halilu Obadaki got injured and Youssef was drafted into the position and he did well. He later played in that position as a second choice left back during his time at Kwara United. He also played wide left.

In Egypt, Youssef first played for Egyptian second division side Ittihad El-Shorta. In 2014, Youssef joined Zamalek for a fee of €200,000 after spending three years at El Shorta. His market value has risen to €800,000 following his stellar performance in the Egyptian league. He has won four trophies since joining Egyptian giants Zamalek in 2014: The Egyptian Premier League in 2014-15, Egypt Cup in 2015, 2016 and the Egyptian Super Cup in 2016.

Youssef who is comfortable as a left full back or central midfielder was called up to the Nigerian team before their AFCON 2019 Qualifiers tie against South Africa, but watched the entire proceedings of the 0-2 loss from the bench as an unused substitute. That singular act by coach of the Nigerian team Gernot Rohr keeps him eligible for Egypt.
