Segun Osoba

Olusegun Osoba born to Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Babatunde Osoba at Egba settlement in Osogbo, Osun State, Nigeria, on July 15th, 1939.  He has worked as a journalist and two time governor of Ogun State.

Segun Osoba Early Life

Osoba attended secondary school at Methodist Boys High School Lagos. He thereafter, obtained a diploma in journalism at the University of Lagos and went for one-year course in the United Kingdom on the scholarship of the Commonwealth Press Union in 1967. In 1969, he was studied in Bloomington, USA at the Indiana University's department of journalism. 

Segun Osoba Career

As a journalist, Osaoba began his career in 1964 with Daily Times as a trainee reporter covering crime stories. He rose through the rank of Daily Times becoming an Editor in 1975. He left the firm in November 1975 to take up the task of General Manager of the Ilorin based Nigerian Herald. He returned to the Times in 1984 as the managing director. He also worked with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), the Times of London,Newsweek Magazine, U.S.A, and the United Press International News Agency (UPI). He was the chairman of the Governing Board of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism and Member of the Executive Board of the International Press Institute representing Black-Africa from 1984-1992. He was a member of the Nigerian Constituent Assembly in 1988. He is also member of the Commonwealth Press Union, London and the Nigerian union of Journalist (NUJ).

Osoba took over the mantle of leadership of Ogun State on January 2, 1992 and established an agenda tied to programmes and policies that targeted impacting positively on the lives of the people of the State. Consequently, infrastructure, education, road rehabilitation and reconstruction, provision of potable water, rural electrification, promotion of accountability and transparency in governance became top priority initiatives during his administration. The desire to reposition the Gateway State for the next wave of industrialization led to the constitution of a seasoned Executive Council and with the support of the legislative arm and judiciary playing the roles expected of strengthening the democratic structure.

Following the restoration of civil rule in 1999, Osoba was elected the governor of Ogun state, a second time. It could be said that the landmark achievements during his first spell actually paved way for Chief Osoba’s return to the exalted seat of leadership in Ogun state. He was succeeded by Otunba Gbenga Daniel.

Segun Osoba Personal Life

Osoba is married to Chief Aderinsola Osoba, the Beere Awujale of Ijebu. They are the parents of four children, two boys and two girls: Kemi, Olumide, Oluyinka and Tobi. He holds the chieftaincy titles of the Akinrogun of Egbaland and the Aremo Awujale of Ijebu.

In 1974, Osoba won the Nieman Fellowship Award for journalism for years postgraduate study at Harvard University Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. He is the first Nigerian to have won this prestigious Nieman Fellowship for Journalism. He holds the National Honours of the Commander of the Order of the Niger CON
