Bukky Ajayi Early Life

Bukky had her primary and secondary school education in Lagos Nigeria. She received a scholarship from the Federal Government and went to study at the Stanislavsky Institute of Drama, London. Her love for theatre emanated from her frequent visit to the cinema with her father while she was very little. She used to do a cardboard sort of cinema for children, and little children had to pay to watch.

Madam Bukky Ajayi came back to Nigeria 1965 after her 6-year stay in England. In 1955, she started working in Nigerian Television Authorities (NTA) as a presentation assistant in Lagos. terwards, she became a presenter and then a news reader.She presented a couple of children’s programmes and ‘Nigerian’s Sketches,’ a programme which was all about Nigerian culture, and Diran Ajijedidun of blessed memory was her producer. he was later transferred to Port Harcourt and later back to Lagos, and it was at that time she started her acting career.

Bukky started with the ‘Village Headmaster’ in the 70s, and she later got a role in Amaka Igwe’s ‘Checkmate.’ She has featured in so many home videos that she has lost count. Shooting of international film ‘Critical Assignment’ in South Africa, is one of the events of her life that she will never forget. It gave her an opportunity to see how it is done elsewhere, other than Nigeria, where a movie is shot in five days. Her popular movies include Mother of George, Indecent Girl, Diamond Ring, Witches, Thunderbolt among others.

Bukky Ajayi Personal Life

Bukky died on July 6th, 2016 at her residence in Surulere after a protracted illness. She had suffered from diabetes, breast cancer, stroke, and hypertension. She was a Christian till the latter part of her life when she converted to Islam. She also added Zainab to her name and was buried immediately she died at the Yaba Cemetery, Lagos according to the Islamic custom. Her children includes; Olakunle Fawole, Alfred Oluwole Shoga, and Claude Akinwande Peter Thomas. She’s Jazzman Olofin’s grandmother-In-law.

In 2016, her contributions to theNigerian film industry was recognized after she and Sadiq Daba were awarded the Industry Merit Award at the 2016 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards. A standing ovation greeted the announcement of the 82-year-old  actress, who was wheeled to the stage to receive her award which was to be her last public outing.
