Christopher Onyekwelu

Christopher Tagbo Onyekwelu was born in Nawfia, Onitsha, Anambra state, Nigeria, in 1898. He was a Nigerian business man who also worked for the Nigerian Railway Corporation.

Christopher Onyekwelu Early Life

Onyekwelu completed his primary education standard 6 in 1918. He went on to enroll as a missionary pupil teacher and a catechist at Enugu Ukwu. 

Christopher Onyekwelu Career

Chris joined the Nigerian Railway Corporation in 1921. He also enrolled in the Police Force but was prevented from taking up the job due to an ill health. In 1924, he ventured into farming briefly, trading in palm produce around Onitsha. He began to import Rangoon rice in 1926. Although the business was profitable, the huge competition forced him to quit in 1929.

Onyekwelu then began trading in bicycle spare parts and sewing machines. He imported the goods from a Birmingham company. He however, left the trade in 1935 for another business. He began to import knitting machines and also set-up a small knitting factory. Other trades he invested in include gramophones and gramophone records. He also worked with Messer's Voice Herchelles and Co. Ltd. of Liverpool, England.

In 1939, he organized a group of singers and musicians called the Onitsha Music Party. They went to Lagos to have their recordings. He made two trips to Europe in 1954 and 1957 to find a recording partner. Onyekwelu was also a chairman of the Onitsha Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Federal Advisory Committee on Customs and Tariffs.

Onyekwelu remained a devout Christian all his life and was an important pillar of the Anglican Church in Nigeria. He was also the treasurer of the All Saints Cathedral in Onitsha.
