Jacob Obande

Jacob Obande was born in 1922 in Elelazi, Igumale, Ado local government area of Benue State, Nigeria to the family of Obande Ochogbo, the district head of Igunmale. He was a Nigerian businessman, administrator and politician.

Jacob Obande Early Life

Jacob had his education at Methodist School in Igunmale, Benue State. Thereafter, he was trained at as a teacher at the Teachers Training College, Uzuakoli, Abia State.

Jacob Obande Career

At the end of his training, Jacob worked as a teacher. He also worked at the Nigerian Railway Corporation as an hotelier, clerical officer and contractor. He was a board member of several companies such as Nigeria Airways, Nigerian Railway, Nigeria Hotels, Benue-Plateau Marketing Company and Nigeria reinsurance.

Jacob soon joined politics and was in 1951 elected as an honorable representative from Idomaland in the Northern house of Assembly. In 1954, he was a member of the Idoma/Otukpo Local Authority. He was also Nigeria's Minister of Mines and Power in the first republic

In 1958, he was appointed as the parliamentary secretary to the Nigerian Prime Minister Tafawa Balewa. In 1959, he won the elected to represent Idoma South East in the parliament. He also served as state chairman for the National Party of Nigeria in the second republic.
