Damaturu is the capital of Yobe state situated in the Northeast geopolitical zone of Nigeria. Damaturu is also a local government area and serves as the headquarter of the Damaturu Emirate. The Hausa and Fulani are the major tribes while Islam is the major religion in Damaturu. Districts/ streets in Damaturu include Gujba road, Jeri, Potiskum road, Sasawa, Gorogi, Gula Marram, Kontula, Kunguwol, Gumunta, and Bulaburum. Tertiary institutions found in Damaturu include the Federal Polytechnic, Shehu Sule School of Nursing and Midwifery, and the Yobe state University. A number of health care institutions are found in Damaturu and these include the General hospital, Yobe Medical Center, General Sani Abacha specialist hospital, Nurudeen clinic and Maternity, Damaturu ultra-modern hospital, City Medical Center and the Yobe state University Teaching Hospital. Notable landmarks in Damaturu include the Central Mosque, Yobe Cargo Airport, Federal Polytechnic Damaturu, Dufana Canoe, and the Emir of Damaturu's Palace.
In recent times however, Damaturu has become a shadow of its former self owing to the nefarious activities of the Boko Haram sect who have wreaked untold havoc in the city forcing majority of the city's inhabitants to flee the violence.
Damaturu falls under the semi-arid climate and boasts of a total area of 2,366km squared. The precipitation is at 850 mm per annum with average temperature at 34 degrees centigrade.
There are two major seasons; the rainy season and the dry season with the dry season lasting for longer periods and being always characterized by intense sunlight.
Crop cultivation and Animal rearing are the primary economic engagements in Damaturu. Also markets such as the Damaturu Central Market, Main market, and the Sunday Market are veritable commercial hubs and add to the city's overall economy.
Damaturu by virtue of its status as the capital city of Yobe state plays host to several government owned establishments which contribute massively to the economy of the city.
