Ado- Ekiti is the capital of Ekiti state located in the Southwest geopolitical zone of Nigeria. Home to Nigeria’s Yoruba tribe, the city has an estimated population of 946,659 inhabitants with the Yoruba and English languages as the most commonly spoken in the city. Popular districts in Ado Ekiti include Simioluwa, Ajilosun, Ifedoju road, Adebayo lane, Ayemi road, Orerewu street, Falegan estate, Ilokun, Araromi, and Aladesanmi layout. The dominant religions in Ado-Ekiti are Christianity and Islam while popular City landmarks include the Afe Babalola University, Emir of Ado's Palace, Fajuyi Memorial Park, Hilmat Hotels, and the Godfather Restaurant and Bar. A number of health care facilities are found in Ado Ekiti and these include the Ekiti state University Teachimg Hospital, St.Greg Hospital, Lifespring Hospital, Ade Tade hospital, Afolabi hospital, Ekiti state specialist hospital, and the Mother and Child specialist hospital.
Important festivals celebrated in Ado ekiti include the Udiroko festival and the Ogun festival while notable tourist attractions in the city include the Iloro waterfalls, and the breathtaking Olosunta hills. Tertiary Institutions domiciled in Ado Ekiti include the Federal Polytechnic, Crown Polytechnic, Ekiti state University, and the Afe Babalola University.
Ado -Ekiti has a total area measuring 293 km squared and falls under the tropical savanna climate. The topography features coarse grained charnockite, medium and fine grained granite with substantial deposits of clay and quartzite.
The city of Ado Ekiti has two major seasons which are the rainy and dry seasons with the rainy season running between March and November while the dry season runs from December to February. The average temperature of Ado Ekiti is 28 degrees centigrade.
Agriculture plays a prominent role in the economy of Ado-ekiti with crops such as kolanut, oil palm, cocoa and brown cocoyam cultivated in substantial quantities. Also the residents of Ado-ekiti engage in commerce at the city’s different markets which include the Oja Oba Market, Fayose market, Bisi Egbeyemi market, and the Erekesan market.
Ado-ekiti’s history can be traced to as early as 1310 A.D when Ewi Awamaro migrated to and settled in the region.
