George Sekibo

George Thompson Sekibo CON, is a Nigerian politician and senator who represented Rivers East Senatorial Zone at the National Assembly. He was born on April 01, 1957 in Ogu Town, Rivers State.

George obtained a Bachelor of Technology (Architecture) degree from Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt and a Master of Engineering degree in Environmental Engineering from the University of Port Harcourt, Choba.
 

George Sekibo Career

Sekibo started quite early in politics and was Chairman/Prefect of some Local Governments in Rivers State area from 1988 to 1989. He was the organizing secretary of the Democratic Party of Nigeria (DPN) in Rivers State from 1997 to 1998 as well the Special Adviser on Projects and Special Adviser on Works to the Governor of Rivers State from 1999 to 2002.

George Sekibo was elected to the National House of Representatives for the Ogu/Bolo/Okrika constituency of Rivers State for the 2003 – 2007 term.

He was elected to the Senate in 2007 as a senator representing Rivers East.

His 2007 election was disputed, but in December 2008 was upheld by the Court of Appeal. He was appointed to Senate committees on Niger Delta, Gas, Federal Character & Inter-Government Affairs, Environment, Downstream Petroleum and Commerce.

Sekibo successfully ran for re-election as Rivers East Senator with the PDP ticket in the April 2011 elections. He defeated Lasbry Amadi of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). 

During the 2015 general elections, Sekibo ran again to retain his senatorial seat at the National Assembly and was declared winner. However, in June 2017, the Rivers state elections petition tribunal sacked Senator Sekibo and declared  Andrew Uchendu  of the All Progressives Congress (APC) the winner of the senatorial election. Sekibo's efforts to overturn the decision at the Appeal Court in Abuja proved unsuccessful as the Appeal Court upheld the earlier verdict of the Rivers State Election Tribunal,
