Anthony Olufunsho Williams (known as Funsho Williams) was born on May 9th, 1948 in Lagos State, Nigeria. He was a popular and gentle Lagos businessman and politician.

Funsho Williams Early Life

Williams attended St. Paul's Catholic School, Ebute-Metta, St. Gregory's College, Obalende in 1971, and graduated from the University of Lagos where he studied Civil Engineering. He also had a Masters Degree in civil engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology USA in 1974.

Funsho Williams Career

Williams worked for Lagos State government for 17 years as a civil servant. In 1994, he served as the commissioner of works under the military governor of Lagos, Olagunsoye Oyinlola. He held directorships in several companies including Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, Cappa and D'Alberto Plc, Ajaokuta Steel Company and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Maritime Authority.

He contested twice before in the Lagos State Gubernatorial election. At the time of his death he was hoping to be nominated as the PDP Gubernatorial candidate for Lagos State. He had vowed to wrest control of the wealthy state from the Alliance for Democracy Party.

Funsho Williams Personal Life

A christian, Williams was married to Hilda, and they both have four kids. He was assassinated on July 27th, 2006 at his Dolphin Estate house in Ikoyi, Lagos. The hired assassins were said to have invaded his home and strangled him to death in his private library at about 11:15 AM Nigerian time. His wife was visiting their kids in New York City during the time of the murder.

Funsho Williams Awards

On February 26th, 2007, former Lagos State governor, Bola Tinubu, in honor of the late iconic character, renamed the longest and the popular Western Avenue highway in Lagos to Funsho William Avenue.
