Azubuike Egwuekwe

Azubuike Emmanuel Egwuekwe was born on July 16th, 1989 in Lafia, Nasarawa State, Nigeria. He is a professional footballer who plays as a central defender for South African side SuperSport United and the Nigerian national team.

Growing up in Lafia, Egwuekwe started playing football with the state's team Nasarawa United in 2006. He also played for OUK in Abia State and NPA of Lagos.

Azubuike Egwuekwe Career

Egwuekwe's first full season came in the 2007/2008 when he joind Yerima Strikers FC. In 2008, he joined top tier side Warri Wolves where he spent seven years. His time at the club was bedevilled with unpaid wages. In an interview, he revealed that Warri Wolves did not win the Nigerian Premier League because he and his colleagues played on “empty an stomach”. In 2014, he had a trial with English club, West Ham, but the transfer did not materialise. He captained Warri Wolves and scored 10 goals in 72 games for the club. In January 2016, he finally left Wolves signing for Finnish club Kuopion Palloseura in the Veikkausliiga League. After just a year in Finland, the defender moved to South Africa joining SuperSport United FC.

He made his international debut for Nigeria in 2012, and has appeared in FIFA World Cup qualifying matches. He was called up to Nigeria’s 23-man squad that won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa. He was selected for Nigeria’s squad at the 2013 Confederations Cup in Brazil, and the 2014 African Nations Championship. He has been capped 34 times by Nigeria.
