Samuel Mathias

Samuel Mathias was born in Kaduna, Nigeria, on December 23rd, 1996. He is a professional footballer who currently plys with El Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri. An Attacking midfielder, Mathias is a prolific and proven goal scorer in the Nigerian league.

Samuel Mathias Early Life

Mathias grew up in Kaduna where he joined Celtic football academy. At the same time, he was training with an amateur club called Santos in Kakuri also in Kaduna. He alternated his training, being at the academy in the morning and with Santos in the evening. At the academy, he met a lot of peers, but in Santos he played with bigger and older players who helped him develop his game.

Samuel Mathias Career

Professionally, Mathias started with Gombe United in 2012. He later joined Kano Pillars in 2013 and played under Coach Baba Ganaru with whom he won the league title. From Pillars he went to Wikki Tourists of Bauchi and then returned to Gombe United. It was from Gombe United that I moved to his present club El-Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri. Mathias scored 12 goals for El-Kanemi Warriors in the 2017 season. 

While at Gombe United, Mathias was invited to the Flying Eagles camp by John Obuh. Unfortunately he could not make the team. However, the same set of Flying Eagles returned from the Africa Championship in South Africa, Obuh again invited him to camp. He travelled with the team to the camp in Germany from where they went for an invitational tournament in France. He was however part of the team but did not make the final squad for the 2013 U-20 World Cup in Turkey.

Mathias was part of the Nigerian team that finished second at the 2017 WAFU Cup in Ghana and helped qualify the team for the CHAN tournament, he however failed to make the final squad.

Outside football, Mathias loves reading books espellicially motivational genres centred around "great men". According to him, this along with his Christian faith both help him get past trying times.He also regularly speaks out against the heinous actions of terrorist group, Boko Haram who have recked havoc in the town of Maiduguri where his team is based.
