Mu'azu Babangida Aliyu was born in Minna, Niger State, Nigeria on November 12th, 1955.

Aliyu’s first educational experience was at Central Primary School, Kuta, Minna and Sultan Primary School, Sokoto. After his primary education, Alhaji Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu went to the College of Arts and Arabic Studies, Sokoto where he graduated in 1974. He proceeded to the College of Education in Sokoto, where he obtained National Certificate of Education. After his teachers training, Alhaji Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu went further to Bayero University, Kano and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States of America where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education and PhD., in Public and International Affairs respectively.
While in school, he exhibited leadership qualities that saw to his emergence as monitor at the elementary and secondary schools level, to being the principal officer in the students union at the College of Education. During his youth service, he interacted with the teachers’ union and came home to establish unionism among teachers in Niger State.
Aliyu worked at the following places: National Youth Service Corps; Jubril Martins Memorial Grammar School, Iponri-Lagos; Government Teachers’ College, Minna. Finally, he reached the highest point in the civil service when he was appointed Federal Permanent Secretary in various ministries.
In the year 2007, Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu was elected the Governor of Niger. In the year 2011, he was re-elected for a second term in office. Aliyu is married to Hjiya Jumai. He got married at the age of 23 barely four months after his National Youth Service in Lagos while his wife was 19. The marriage is blessed with six children - four boys and two girls.
Answering a question on when he got married he said, “Luckily for me, I married a woman I love and a woman I pursued for more than four years. It was like a prophecy that i was going to marry her. I made the prophecy myself. I actually went to a girl friend’s house and I saw the picture of my wife and I looked at it and I said to the senior sister to my girlfriend in form of prophecy that ‘this is my wife’ and I asked, ‘who is she.?’
“They tried to describe her and I never knew I was going to meet her. Honestly, with her photograph I saw, I just fell in love with her. When I eventually met her, she was more beautiful than what I saw in the picture.”
The first son to a former governor, Mr.Ibrahim Babangida Aliyu, got married in September 2016.
