Mathias Ugochukwu

Mathias Nwafor Ugochukwu was born on February 28th, 1926 in Nsogwu Umunze, the headquarters of Orumba south local government area in Anambra state of Nigeria. He was a prominent businessman, industrialist, daring entrepreneur and traditional ruler. He was pivotal in the large scale industrialization and manufacturing of Nigeria's Eastern Region.

Mathias attended St. Augustine's School, Umunze, Government School, Jose, Southern Police College in Ikeja, Lagos and Economic Development Institute, Washington in the United States. 

Mathias Ugochukwu Career

At the end of his primary school, the young Mathias left for the city of Jos in Plateau state where he worked as a caretaker for a fellow Igbo business man. Having also worked as a trader, he also worked in th Police force back home in Anambra state. 

As a businessman, he founded many firms, forming a strong conglomerate. He was the chairman of various industries including; John Holt (Nigeria) Ltd., Biscuit Manufacturing Company of Nigeria Ltd., Ugochukwu & Sons Ltd., Ugochukwu Chemical Industries Ltd., West African Provincial Insurance Company Ltd., Ugochukwu Typres Ltd. chairman, Engineering and Mercantile Enterprises Ltd., and African Produce Dealers Ltd. He was also a former chairman Nigerian Industrial Development Bank Ltd.  He had spells at the Nigeria Railway Corporation, Federal Tenders Board, member and Capital Issues Commission of the Federation.

The distinguished realtor was also a prominent Igbo leader of his time, who played politics at the highest level largely behind the scene. The Eze Ohazurume I of Igboland was a man who earned the respect of his peers and admirers in his life time through hard-work and exceptional brilliance. His industrious nature proved that one man was enough to transform a community if he had the will, he single handedly put the name of his community on the map as an industrial city in Nigeria. Mathias was truly a “white eagle that dazzled” when he was here on earth with us.

 

Mathias Ugochukwu Personal Life

Nicknamed Ugobuzuo, he got married in 1950 and had seven children. He was a friend to various Igbo political leaders such as K. O. Mbadiwe and the former Nigerian Vice President, Alex Ekwueme, a relationship which some say led to his detention under the administration of General Buhari. His hobbies included tennis and organ play. He died in 1990.
