Samuel Herbert Pearse Biography / Profile

Samuel Herbert Pearse was born on November 20, 1865 in Lagos State, Nigeria to Rev. Samuel R. Pearse, a clergy with the Church Missionary Society (CMS). He was an indigene of Egbaland in Abeokuta, Ogun State. He was an entrepreneur and pioneer shipper and produce exporter.

Samuel Herbert Pearse Early Life

Pearse's father was born in Sierra Leone to Abeokuta Egba parents and moved to Lagos in 1856 where he served as a clegy at a CMS church in Ebute Ero, Lagos. It was during this time that Pearse was born. He attended Lagos elementary schools and the CMS Grammar School from 1879 to 1883.

After his secondary education, Pearse worked for several European firms before starting his own company, Pearse and Thompson. In 1907 he went to Calabar, where he grew rich through trade in ivory. He returned to Lagos a wealthy man and continued as a produce merchant. 

Pearse served as secretary of the Lagos Auxiliary of the Anti-Slavery and Aborigines Protection Society and accompanied the Yoruba chiefs to London, serving as interpreter. He later quarreled with Mojola Agbebi and supported the reorganization of the auxiliary. He was nominated to the Legislative Council in 1915 as a reward for opposing the Herbert Macaulay-Agbebi faction of the auxiliary. He was also treasurer of the Reform Club. He was appointed as the representative from Egba to the Legislative Council from 1923 to 1933.
