Gilbert was raised in Nigeria, a country they had both come to love passionately. He was sent to study at the College des Freres Chretiens in Lebanon and after returning to Nigeria began a promising business career, rising quickly to become Director of Sales for a Nigerian car company.

Gilbert’s commitment to African development was further cemented following his marriage to Rose Marie Chamchoun, the daughter of a successful businessman operating in Niger and Benin. It was this commitment which focussed Gilbert’s development of a business empire, almost entirely based in Africa.

With brother Ronald Chagoury in partnership, the Chagoury industrial and financial empire has grown to encompass a multi-faceted business chain, determined to break the myths and perceptions of African developmental limitations. Chagoury’s plans for the future include tying up the best of African industry to the resource needs of China, India and Latin America. He is the owner of the giant Eko Hotel & Suites in Lagos and the groundbreaking Eko Atlantic City.

In 2013 and FBI intelligence report in the US claimed Chagoury sent funds to Aoun, who, in turn, gave the money to Hezbollah. The report said the information was unverified from a source, who also said the Lebanese Christian politician was ‘facilitating fundraising for Hezbollah.’ He was banned by the US government. In 2017, the business mogul and the US agreed to settle the lawsuit over anonymous leaks that suggested that the tycoon was financing a terrorist organization.

Giberlt got married to Rose Marie Chamchoum in 1969 and they live in Victoria Island, Lagos.. They have three children; Ramez Gilbert Chagoury, Gilbert Antoine, and Christopher Chagoury.
