Soon after obtaining his license, Hon Rufai worked in the aviation industry before joining politics. In 2011 he was elected into the Federal House of Representatives to represent Kaduna South Constituency. He is a member of the People's Democratic Party (PDP).

From May 2011 to May 2015, he served as member of the following House committees; Population, Emergency & Disaster Preparedness, Women Affairs & Social Development, Police Affairs, and Rural Development. He also served as Vice Chairman of Aviation Committee.

In 2015 he was re-elected for a second term. He is currently the Vice Chairman of Customs and Excise Committee. His legislative interest include transport, aviation, Federal Character Commission, Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and Federal Capital Territory.
