Hon Garba Umar Durbunde was born in 1958 in Takai Local Government Area of Kano State, Nigeria. He is a Nigerian politician and lawmaker representing Sumaila/Takai Constituency at the Federal House of Representatives.

Hon Umar attended Teacher's College Gumel, Jigawa State. He graduated in 1978 with Grade II certificate. He proceeded to Kano State Polytechnic and graduated in 1988 with diploma. He also attended Ashford University in San Diego, California, USA.
From 1978 to 1980, Hon Umar worked as a teacher in Kano State. From 199 9 to 2007 he was the Chairman at Takai Local Government Area, Kano State. From 2011 to 2015 he was an Honourable Commissioner in Kano State. He also served as Chairman of Investment and Properties in Kano State.
In 2015 he was elected under the platform of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) to represent Sumaila/Takai Federal Constituency at the National Assembly.
On Tuesday May 30th, 2017, Hon Umar was abducted in Jere area along the Abuja-Kaduna road while driving to Kano from Abuja. He was however released a day later after paying a sizeable ransom which he refused to disclose.
