Kano city is the largest city and the capital of Kano state situated in the Northwest geopolitical enclave of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The city of Kano which also doubles as the capital of the Kano Emirate consists of as much as 8 local government areas which include Kano municipal, Fagge, Dala, Gwale, Tarauni, Nasarawa, Ungogo, and Kumbotso LGAs. The population of Kano city is estimated at about 2,161,733 inhabitants with a vast majority of these being members of the Hausa and Fulani ethnic groups. Popular streets/ districts in Kano city include Al-Waha, Bompai GRA, Goldcoast strreet, Sabon Gari, Gwargwarma, Gyadi Gyadi, Karkasara, Fagge, Kofar, Na'Isa, and Shahuchi. Tertiary institutions found in Kano city include the Bayero University, Kano state University of Science and Technology, Federal College of Education, School of Health Technology and the Northwest University.
Islam is the most widely practiced religion with an estimated 62.7 percent of the population as registered Muslims. Hausa and English are the widely spoken languages in Kano city while popular city landmarks include the Sani Abacha sports stadium which is the home ground of Kano pillars football club, the Aminu Kano international Airport, Kano Golf Club, Lebanon Club, Gidan Makama Museum, Roxy Amusement Park, Ado Bayero Mall, Murtala Muhammed Library, Central Mosque, and the palace of the Emir of Kano. A number of hospitals are found in Kano City and these include the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Standard Specialist Hospital, Murtala Muhammed specialist hospital, National Orthopaedic hospita, Bakin Ruwa hospital, ECWA Eye hospital, Hasiya Bayero Children's hospital, Cordial Hospital and Maternity, and the Khadijat memorial hospital.
Kano city has a total area extending to around 499 km squared and falls under the tropical savannah climate. Temperatures in Kano are largely hot with average annual temperature pegged at about 34 degrees centigrade. The average rainfall in Kano city is estimated at about 1450 mm per annum with average humidity at about 61 percent.
The topography of Kano consists of flat lands with the predominant soil types in most parts of the city being the sandyloam and the loamy soils with substantial quantities of clay found in parts of the city.
The city of Kano is known as a leading commercial hub in the Northern parts of Nigeria. The city is known for massive Agricultural outputs which include groundnuts, rice, and millet as well as its booming textile business which features the traditional business of fabric dyeing which has till date remained a critical feature of the city’s economic life. Trade is another critical aspect of the economic life of Kano City with the ancient town hosting a number of markets such as the Kurmi market, Sabon gari market, and the Kantin Kwari market.
Kano is also known for the production and sale of a plethora of items which include plastic, hides and skin, clothing materials and leather and these commercial activities draw thousands of Visitors to the city on a daily basis.
The area now known as Kano was originally referred to as Dala which is a name derived from a residual hill which in he 7th century served as abode to a community that engaged in activities such as hunting and iron work. A famous Priest by the name of Barbushe is widely regarded as the city’s first settler and founder.
Kano city was also the administrative seat of the old Northern Nigeria region.
