Asaba

Asaba is the capital of Delta state found in the Southsouth geopolitical zone of Nigeria. The city has a total of four local government areas which include Oshimili north, Oshimili south, Aniocha North, and Aniocha south. The city’s population is estimated at 1,118,019 inhabitants. Christianity and traditional religion are the widely practiced religions in Asaba while the English and Pidgin English languages are the commonly spoken in the town. Popular districts in Asaba include Ezenei, Central Area, Isieke, Okpanam, Overhead bridge layout, Umuagu, Umuonaje, Cablepoint, Egbuna Onyuka street, and Nnebisi road. Tertiary institutions in Asaba include the Federal College of Education (Technical) Asaba and the National Open University of Nigeria. 

Popular festivals in Asaba town include the Inne festival and the New Yam festival while the important places to visit in the city are the Mungo Park house, Lander Brothers Anchorage, the Residency of the Royal Niger Company, Grand hotel, Abraka Turf and Country Club, the Otuogu beach and the Expatriate graveyard. A number of hospitals are found in Asaba and these include the Asaba general hospital, Kanayo hospital, Nordica hospital, Siri hospital, Federal Medical Center, Christ Hospital, St joseph Catholic hospital, St Luke hospital, and the Okwe General hospital.  

GEOGRAPHY

Asaba has a total area of 268 km squared and falls under the tropical savannah climate. Precipitation levels are appreciable at 3800 mm per annum with average temperature of 26 degrees.

Humidity in Asaba is estimated at 83 percent while the City has two main seasons; the dry and rainy seasons. 

ECONOMY

The Oil and gas sector contributes immensely to the economy of Asaba. Also, commerce is another major economic engagement of the inhabitants of Asaba owing to the city’s many markets such as the Ogbogonogo market, Asaba modern market, Okpanam market, Cable market, Abraka market, New market, Mammy market, Asaba international market and the close proximity to the commercial town of Onitsha.

HISTORY

Asaba was founded by Nnebisi in the 15th century and was officially created in 1884. Asaba was the capital of the old Southern Nigeria protectorate and was the center of the Ekumeku war which was the longest resistance against British colonization in Nigeria .
