Katsina city is both a local government area and the capital city of Katsina state found in the Northwest geopolitical zone of Nigeria. The city of katsina has close proximity to Sokoto, Kano and Niger states with the majority of the city’s dwellers being of the Fulani and Hausa ethnic groups. Popular districts in Katsina City include Batagarawa, GRA, Kofar Marusa, Kofar Samri layout, Fuskar Kusu, Fuskar Gabas, Garin Tandu, and Fuskar Yamma. Tertiary institutions in Katsina city include the Federal College of Education, Al-Qalam University, Hassan Usman Katsina Polytechnic, and the Umaru Yar Adua University.
Katsina city has an estimated population of about 1, 234, 762 inhabitants with a vast majority of the city dwellers as followers of the Islam religion. Popular landmarks in the city of Katsina include the Gobarau Minaret which is an 18th century Mosque built with mud and palm branches and which also serves as a historical and religious reference to the city’s dwellers, Kaduna Township statdium, Katsina state Government House, National Museum, the Katsina State University, and the Royal palace of the Emir referred to in the local language as Gidan Korau which is one of the oldest palaces in Hausaland. Katsina City has a total area measuring about 142 km squared with a humidity of 27 percent. The city of Katsina has a hot semi-arid climate with average temperatures at about 34 degrees centigrade.
Rainfall is relatively sparse with annual precipitation levels pegged at 900 mm while the city has two main seasons which are the rainy and dry season with the dry season extending for much periods of the calendar year.
The city of Katsina has a vibrant economic life buoyed by the appreciable level of Agricultural activities within the City’s territory. Prominent among the crops cultivated in Katsina are Groundnut, cotton, millet and guineacorn. Trade also booms in Katsina City with the town hosting a number of markets such as the Dandume market, Kokami market, and the Sheme market.
The city of Katsina also has an appreciable level of industries which produce items such as groundnut oil, hides and skin and steel. Animal rearing which is a popular economic engagement of the Fulani people is widely practiced in Katsina city.
The city of Katsina was officially created in the year 1987 but was actually founded as early as the year 1100 AD with the spiritual and political leaders in that time addressed by the title of Sarki.
Katsina was conquered by the Fulani in the war of 1807 while British rule was introduced within the city in the year 1903following the arrival of the colonial masters. Katsina city has had an Emirate spanning several centuries with the latest in this line of succession being Emir Abdulmumini Kabir Usman.
