Akure

Akure is the largest city and capital of Ondo state found in the Southwest geopolitical zone of Nigeria. The major tribe is the Yoruba and Yoruba and English languages are the common means of communication. Islam and Christianity are the most practiced religions in Akure. Tertiary institutions in Akure town include the Federal University of Technology, Ondo state University of Science and technology, Best Solutions Polytechnic, Innovation Institute of technology, Federal College of Agriculture, and the Akure Business School. 

Akure's population is estimated at 1, 244,776 inhabitants while popular areas in the city include Alagbaka, Ajasin way, Igbatoro road, Ijapo estate, Oba Ile, Owode, Okearo, Ijomu, Araromi, Gbadare Ondo bye pass, Osinle Sijuade estate, Fanini estate and Olukayode street. important city landmarks include the Federal University of Technology Akure, the palace of the Deji of Akure, Dome international event center, D-rock amusement park and recreation center , Ondo state governmnet house and the Akure township stadium. Festivals held in Akure city include the very popular Egungun festival which attracts thousands of visitors and tourists to the city.

GEOGRAPHY

Akure is situated within the tropical rainforest zone and falls under the tropical savannah climate. The city of Akure also boasts a total estimated area of 991 km squared.

The dry and rainy seasons are the major seasons in Akure with humidity estimated at 73 percent in the city.

ECONOMY

Agriculture is the major economic engagement of the inhabitants of Akure and the major crops grown include cotton, cocoa, yam, cassava, and tobacco. Trade also contributes immensely to Akure’s economy with prominent markets such as the Shasha market, Erekesan market, NEPA market, Isolo market, Odopetu market, Akure modern market,  and the Oja-Oba market playing prominent roles in this regard.

HISTORY

Akure is believed to have been founded by Omoremi Omoluabi, grandson of Oduduwa when he left Ile-Ife to migrate to and settle in the present day Akure.
