The Company was incorporated in 1971 under the name Nigerian Economic Welfare Services Limited as a purely Consultancy/Training outfit by the then Bendel State Government.

In 1987, it was reorganised into its present status as a Finance Company under the name Universal Investment and Development Company (UIDC) Ltd. Its scope of activities was similarly enlarged to reflect its enhanced status.
