Enugu State

Enugu State is one of the five states that make up the SouthEast geopolitical zone of Nigeria. The state shares boundaries with Abia, Imo, Benue, Kogi and Anambra states and the name Enugu literally means on top of the hill. With a population of about 3, 257, 298 inhabitants, Enugu state has a total of 17 Local government areas which include Enugu south, Enugu North, Nkanu west, Udi, Awgu, Oji River, Ezeagu, Igbo Eze North, Isi-uzo, Nsukka, Igbo- etiti, Uzo-Uwani, Enugu East, Aninri, Nkanu East, and Udenu. Hospitals in Enugu state include the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital Ituku- Ozalla, Enugu state University Teaching Hospital Parklane, Mount Carmel Hospital New Haven, Hansa Clinic Independence Layout, Good shepherd specialist Hospital Uwani, Hilton Clinic Independence layout, and the Neo Specialist hospital Independence layout. 

The capital of the state is also known as Enugu while other prominent towns in the state include Agbani, Amechi, Ezeagu and  Nsukka where the renowned University of Nigeria is located. The majority of the state’s inhabitants are members of the Igbo tribe and Christianity is the most widely practiced religion within the state. Popular languages spoken in Enugu state are the Igbo and English languages. Enugu state hosts a number of tertiary institutions which include the University of Nigeria Nsukka, the University of Nigeria Enugu Campus, Enugu state University of Science and Technology Agbani, Institute of Management and Technology, Caritas University, Godfrey Okoye University, National Open University of Nigeria, and the College of Education Eha- Amufu.  

Enugu is home to a number of local delicacies which include Okpa, Abacha and the Ewa soup. Popular landmarks in Enugu state include the Nnamdi Azikiwe Sports Stadium, Micheal Okpara square, the Akanu Ibiam international Airport and the Enugu State University of Science and Technology. Enugu state also boasts a number of tourist attractions which include the Ezeagu Tourist Complex, Awhum waterfall and Cave, Akwuke- Atakwu beach, Ngwo Cave and waterfall, Udi hills, Ogelube Lake, Ani Ozalla lake, Milken hill, Iheneke lake, and the Nike Lake and Resort. Important festivals held in Enugu state include the Ekpe masquerade festival in Nkanu East, Iri Ji festival, Mmanwu festival, Odo festival in Ngwo, Omabe masquaerade festival in Enugu Ezike, Akatakpa masquerade festival in Ovoko-Nsukka, New Yam festival, Oruku festival, and the Nta festival.

GEOGRAPHY OF ENUGU STATE

Enugu has a total area of 7,161 km squared with the topography characterized by a preponderance of hills and flat lands. The average annual precipitation is 2,100 mm while the average temperature is 28 degrees centigrade.

Enugu state has two distinct seasons which are the rainy and dry seasons. The rainy season usually starts from late March till October while the dry season runs from october to early March. The harmattan season always comes between the months of November and January.

ECONOMY OF ENUGU STATE

Enugu state is both an agricultural and commercial state with the presence of several markets with the most prominent being the Ogbete Main market. Other popular Markets include the New Market, Kenyatta Market, Abakpa market, Mayor market, Afia nine, Abakpa meat market and the Artisan Market.

A good number of the rural population of the state also engage in subsistence farming with cassava, cocoyam and yam as the major farm produce. Mineral resources found in Enugu state include Coal, limestone, Iron ore, Bauxite, Shale gas, glass sand, Iron stone, clay, gypsum, and Alum. 

HISTORY OF ENUGU STATE

Enugu state was created in 1991 after being carved out of Anambra state. Enugu state was also the capital of the old Eastern region. Full list of past governors/administrators of Enugu state include
