Adamawa State

Adamawa State is found in the NorthEast geopolitical zone of Nigeria. The State's capital is Yola and has 4 administrative regions namely Adamawa, Gariye, Mubi and Numan. Adamawa State boasts 21 Local government areas which include Demsa, Fufore, Ganye, Gayuk, Girei, Gombi, Guyuk, Jada, Lamurde, Madagali, Maiha, Mayo Belwa, Michika, Mubi North, Mubi south, Numan, Shelleng, Song, Toungo, Yola North, and Yola South. Adamawa state shares boundaries with Borno, Gombe, and Taraba States.Prominent tertiary Institutions in Adamawa include the American University in Yola, the Nigerian Law School, Adamawa state University Mubi, Adamawa state College of Agriculture Mubi, Adamawa state Polytechnic, Federal University of Technology Yola, Federal College of Education Potiskum,College of Health Technology Yola, and the Adamawa state College of Nursing and Midwifery. Notable landmarks in Adamawa state include the Kamale Mountain peak in Michika, the Sukur cultural landscape at the foot of the Mandara mountains, the Koma hills, Lamurde hot spring, Shebshi mountains, the Mandara Mountains and the confluence of Rivers Benue and Gongola situated in Numan Ubi .

Major tribes in Adamawa State include the Bachama, Burra, Fulani, Bali, Gudu, Bata, Koma, Mumuye, Kamwe, Fali, Kilba, Gaanda, Gombi,Yandang and Yungur. Predominant languages spoken in Adamawa State include the Hausa and the Fufulde. Important festivals held in Adamawa state include the Zhita festival in Bazza, Dukwa and Yawal festivals in Madagali, Tiwe festival of the Kilba, Njuwa fishing festival at Njuwa Lake Yola, Yinagu fishing festival in Michikaand the Kwete cultural festival of the Bachama ethnic group. 

Religious inclinations in Adamawa oscillate between Christianity, Islam and the traditional religion with the state serving as headquarters to two christian denominations which are the Lutheran Church of Nigeria and the Church of the Brethren in Nigeria . In recent times however, Adamawa State which boasts a population of about 3,168,284 inhabitants has been plagued by Civil unrest manifested in the activities of members of the Boko Haram Sect who wish to enthrone an islamic caliphate in the sub-region.

GEOGRAPHY OF ADAMAWA STATE

Adamawa State has large sparses of arable farmland suitable for crop cultivation and grazing. The annual temperature ranges between 30-32 degrees centigrade characterized by extremely hot  dry seasons. Average annual rainfall is 1370 mm while the State has a total land mass of 36,917km squared making it one of the largest states in Nigeria by territory.

Adamawa State is a mountainous land characterized by the presence of several peaks and hills. The topography of Adamawa state also features large river valleys of the Benue, Gongola, and the Yesdarem Rivers with several valleys emanating from mountains such as the Cameroon, the Mandara and the Adamawa mountains constituting the state's landscape.   

ECONOMY OF ADAMAWA STATE

Agriculture is the predominant economic engagement of the people of Adamawa State owing to the fertility and composition of the dominant vegetational zones found in the state which include the Northern Guinea Savannah zone and the Sub- Sudan vegetational zone. A plethora of crops ranging from cotton to groundnuts and rice are cultivated in the State Other crops grown in Adamawa state include Yam, millet, cassava and guinea corn while cattle rearing is also very popular amongst the fulani populace. 

Fishing is another economic activity engaged in by the inhabitants of the communities that are located on the banks of the state's rivers. Trade also flourishes in Adamawa state with the state hosting several markets which include the Jimeta Old market in Yola, the Ganye cattle market, Yola main market, Ngurore central market, and the Mubi town market. A number of mineral resources are also deposited in Adamawa state and these include Granite, clay, gypsum, limestone, Uranium, kaolin, coal, Baryte, salt, sand, ilminite, marble, magnesite, and lateritic clay. 

HISTORY OF ADAMAWA STATE

Adamawa State was created in 1991 out of the then Gongola State. The name Adamawa originates from the Kingdom's founder Modibbo Adama who settled in the region in the 16th century . Adamawa State also boasts an illustrious Emirate spanning several decades in the traditional administration of the region with the current Emir being Muhammadu Barkindo Aliyu Musdafa. 

Prior to its emergence as a Nigerian state, Adamawa was a subordinate kingdom of the Sokoto Sultanate with the rulers referred to as Lamidos in the local Fufulde language. Past Governors of Adamawa state and their tenures include
