Theophilus Adebayo Doherty Early Life

Doherty grew up with his family in Lagos where he attended primary and secondary schools. He attended C.M.S. Grammar School, Lagos, from 1910 to 1912 and thereafter, King's College, Lagos from 1913 to 1916. After his secondary education, he proceeded to the London School of Economics and at the Middle Temple.

Theophilus Adebayo Doherty Career

In 1928, Doherty was elected to represent Lagos in the the Legislative Council under the umbrella of the Nigerian National Democratic Party. After a second tenure from 1933, he declined to contest for a third in 1938. He was a director of the Nigerian Medicines Stores, West African Pictures, Ltd, and the Nigerian General Insurance Company.

He ventured into business in 1933, co-founding the National Bank of Nigeria alongside Olatunde Johnson and other businessmen. He was also into importing and exporting, and joined the Nigerian Association of African Importers and Exporters.

Theophilus was married to Victoria Adebayo-Doherty and had three children; Jimi Adebayo-Doherty (son), Olabisi Debayo-Doherty (daughter) and Chief Ademola Debayo-Doherty (son). He died on November 18th, 1974.
