Hon. Onyema attended Baptist College where he earned his West African Senior Certificate (WAEC). He further obtained a Bachelor's degree in Economics from the University of Benin in Edo State.

Hon. Onyema has worked in the legislative and local government council. After leaving the private sector, he joined politics. As a lawmaker, he is a ranking member, having served in that capacity in the sixth Assembly (2007-2011), during which time he was Chairman House Committee on Works, Chairman Committee on Police Service Commission, among other committee membership. He was re-elected in 2015. Presently, he is the Deputy Minority Leader of the House of Representatives. He is a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).  His legislative interests include improved road network, health care for all, education and marine transport. His target achievement is focused on improved society for youth, women and children.
