Agbor

Agbor is both a kingdom and town located in the oil rich Delta state of Nigeria’s southsouth geopolitical zone. Agbor  is home to indigenes of the Ika tribe and other tribes found in the town include the itsekiris, ijaws and the urhobos. Tertiary institutions found in Agbor include the College of Education Agbor, School of Nursing Agbor, and the Delta state Institute of Continuing Education Center. A number of hospitals are found in Agbor and they include the Our Redeemer family Medical Clinic and Maternity, Anioma hospital, Cent hospital, SECHO Specialty hospital, and the Ndu hospital.  

Agbor is also the taadministrative seat of the Ika local government area. Agbor has a population of about 568,980 inhabitants with Christianity and traditional religions as the dominant faiths. Popular districts in Agbor include Ogbemudien, Omumu, and Ihogbe, Alibaba quarters, Boji boji, GRA, New Benin Road, Ugbaja street, Aliokpu, Owa, Oyoko, Ekuoma, and Ozanogogo. Popular landmarks in Agbor include the Royal Courtyard hotel, Legend Hotel, Royal Palace of the Dein of Agbor, Royal Academy, and the Ozanogogo Secondary School. 

GEOGRAPHY

Agbor has a total area of about 56km squared with an average temperature of 24 degrees centigrade.

Precipitation levels in Agbor are quite appreciable with average rainfall estimated at 3200 mm. The topography of Agbor consists of several rivers and tributaries.

ECONOMY

Agriculture is an important contributor to Agbor’s economy. Trade also booms in Agbor town with the town hosting a  number of markets such as the Agbor main market, CTC market, Baleke market, Afia Ogbema, Eken Aliagwai, Afor Aligekede 

Also, fishing and crude oil exploration provide the inhabitants of Agbor wiih veritable sources of livelihood.

HISTORY

Agbor was founded in 1829 by indigenes of the Ika tribe who settled there with commerce and fishing as their predominant occupations.
