 Lagos State College of Health Technology, formerly known as School of Hygiene, the College of Health Technology was established in 1920 by Dr. I. Oladipo Oluwole, the first Nigerian Medical Officer of Health.  At its inception, the school in response to the prevailing health situation and available indigenous health human resources, offered courses for the following categories of Health Workers.

• Sanitary Overseers
• Assistant Sanitary Overseers
• Vaccinators and Yaws Scouts as well as Clinic Assistants, and Home Visitors. Between 1957 and 1966, it incorporated in its programme, the training of Community Midwives and Nurses.
• Public Health Superintendents;
• Public Health Assistants
• Community Health Assistants
• Community Health Aides.

The school was transformed into a School of Health Technology on Monday 21st February, 1977, following the directives of the Federal Military Government as contained in the Third National Development Plan 1975 – 1980, on National Basic Health, Service Scheme (NBHSS) with the mandate to train middle level manpower for the health sector. 

With the establishment of the School of Health Technology in February 1977, all the clinics were moved to other areas within the jurisdiction of the present Mainland Local Government.   The school was responsible for the training of:

In 1980, the first set of Pharmacy Assistants, Medical Laboratory Assistants and X-ray Assistants were admitted into the School.  In 1982, the training of Public Health Assistants was phased out while the first set of Community Health Assistants returned for Community Health Supervisors training.

            On the 22nd January 2004, the Law establishing the Lagos State College of Health Technology was assented to by His Excellency, the former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. In accordance with the law, the Governing Council was constituted and inaugurated by the Babatunde Raji Fashola(SAN) administration July 2012.
