The University of Benin Teaching Hospital is situated along the Benin Lagos Highway, it shares a boundary with the main campus of the University of Benin, its other Boundary is the Federal Girls Government College Road, Benin City. 
The University of Benin Teaching Hospital was set up by Edict no 12 of 1971 under the then Midwestern state government of Col. Samuel Osaigbovo Ogbemudia, the Military Governor of the state. The Hospital was a worthy complement to the University of Benin which has similarly been established by the same visionary administration.

The Mandate of the UBTH: healing, Teaching and Research was clear and expedient and included the provision of a full range of hospital and specialist service to the community, provision of medical facility for the education of students in medical sciences as well as research.
With an initial bed capacity of 360 when it was officially opened on 12 May 1973, the UBTH today boast of a bed capacity of 860 as at August 2017 and still increasing with a multiplicity of departments offering a wide range of services all of which combined to make the institution a Centre of Excellence as its stands today.

The UBTH was taken over by the Federal Government on 1 April, 1975 as the fifth teaching hospital coming after Ibadan teaching hospital and Lagos Teaching Hospital. The institution has been decisively responding to challenges as they arise, to the extent that the UBTH could boastfully say that it has effectively discharged its Mandate.

For over forty years now, the Tertiary referral hospital, widely acknowledged as a Centre of Excellence, has remarkably and effectively served as the last port of call for expert management of diverse and varied disease conditions in Edo, Delta, part of kogi and Ondo state which largely form its catchment area and sometimes further away.

Besides the enviable achievements of its main traditional clinical departments, there has also been a remarkable development of its sub – specialties. Mention must be made of eminent doctors, scholars and managers who have played one role or the other as helmsmen of the veritable health institution. 

These include Dr.(Mrs) Irene Ighodalro, prof. T.Belo-Osagie, Prof.M.Ogbeide, Prof. N.O.Osamo, all of Blessed memory as well as Mr.F.G.a Cole,Prof J.O Ayanru, and prof. J.A.Omene all of who had ot one time or the other functioned as board chairman, Provost/Medical Directors or administrators in UBTH.
Late prof. J.C.Ebie, Prof. A.U.Oronsaye, Prof. Austine Obasohan have all also served as Chief Medical Directors of UBTH in the past. Under prof. Eugine okpere, there has been a quantum leap at the UBTH especially in relation to hitherto abandoned projects. 

Remarkably vices are also very evident today and all these combined makes it imperative to salute the foresight,drive and initiative of prof. Eugine okpere in greatly reorienting staff of all shades, to the extent that many now refer to the new development phenomenon as the okpere wonders.

Today, the UBTH could boast of a Dialysis Centre, CTScanning Service, a fully integrated Accident centre and a fully functional Oxygen production plant to effectively meet the need of the hospital amongst so numerous innovation.
In areas of training and research, The UBTH has not lacked behind either .
