William Onyeabor was born on March 29, 1946 into a poor family in Enugu state.

Disatisfied with the hand he was dealt, William Onyeabor saved up to travel to Europe to study record manufacturing .
He founded his own recording studio, record label, pressing plant and film company in the late 70s and between 1977 and 1985, he released nine albums under his Wilfilms label.
He disowned his musical career after becoming a born-again Christian eventually getting ordained as a pastor and, according to friends, privately recording gospel music.
In the 2010s, some of his songs appeared on various compilations, most frequently his biggest hit, "Better Change Your Mind", which appeared on Africa 100, World Psychedelic Classics 3: Love's a Real Thing – The Funky Fuzzy Sounds of West Africa, and Nigeria 70: The Definitive Story of 1970's Funky Lagos through labels such as Luaka Bop.
His song "Fantastic Man" was featured in Apple's iPhone 7 Plus "Barbers" commercial in 2017
At the age of 70, on January 15, 2017, William Onyeabor died in his sleep and is survived, according to the label, by four grandchildren, children and wife.
