About Brass Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Brass is one of the eight local government areas found in Bayelsa state, Southern Nigeria. The headquarters of the area are in the town of Brass. Popular towns and villages in Brass LGA include Obudogbene, Akassa, Igbabele, Oporoma, Wagite, Isikara, Duokumgbene, and Aparabio. The most populous tribe in the LGA are the Nembe ethnic sub division of the Ijaw tribe while the Nembe dialect is widely spoken in the area. Christianity and traditional religion are the widely practiced faiths in Brass LGA while popular landmarks in the LGA include the Edumanom National forest Reserve and the old consulate buildings used by the colonial administrators in the pre-independence era.


GEOGRAPHY OF BRASS

Brass LGA lies on the coastline off the Bight of Bonny and covers a total area of 1404 square kilometres. Brass LGA is heavily forested and consists of a number of rivers and tributaries which include the Brass River and the Nun River. The average temperature of the area is 25 degrees centigrade with humidity level pegged at 91 percent. Wind speed in Brass LGA is put at 16 km/h.


ECONOMY OF BRASS

Brass LGA has enormous deposits of crude oil and natural gas and has the presence of several national and international oil mining firms. The activities of these oil mining firms have contributed the most to the economic development of the area. Farming is also an important economic activity in Brass LGA with crops such as oil palm, plantain, and sugarcane grown in the area. Fishing, the making of fishing nets and the construction of canoes are other key economic features of the area.
