Kolokuma/opokuma

Kolokuma Opokuma local government area is one of the eight LGAs that make up Bayelsa state, South South Nigeria. The headquarters of the area are in the town of Kaiama. Kolokuma Opokuma shares boundaries with the Yenagoa LGA and is made up of towns and villages such as Ofonibiri, Odi, Ayibabiri, Sampu, Oyobu, Igbedi, Kalama, and Oyobu. The estimated population of Kolokuma Opokuma LGA is put at 194,772 inhabitants with the area majorly populated by members of the Ijaw ethnic group. The Ijaw language is widely spoken in the area while the religion of Christianity is the widely practiced religion in the area. Popular festivals held in Kolokuma Opokuma include the Efi fishing festival and the Onde Fiyai Siiko festival. Prominent traditional rulers in Kolokuma Opokuma LGA include the Opuokun of Opokuma and the Ibedaowei of Kolokuma while the notable landmarks in the area include the NYSC orientation camp in Kaiama.

Kolokuma Opokuma LGA covers a total area of 361 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 26 degrees centigrade. The area is well forested and hosts the Bayelsa National Forest. The area has a number of rivers and lakes flowing within its territories and these include the Efi lake.

ECONOMY OF KOLOKUMA/OPOKUMA

Kolokuma Opokuma LGA is a hub for fishing with the area’s rivers and tributaries being rich in sea food. Trade also flourishes in the area with the area hosting a number of markets such as the Odi main market where a large number of commodities are bought and sold. Farming is another important engagement of the people of Kolokuma Opokuma with crops such as banana, plantain and cassava grown in the area.
