Sagbama

Sagbama local government area is one of the eight LGAs found in Bayelsa state, South-south geopolitical zone of Nigeria. The headquarters of the LGA are in the town of Sagbama with the area comprising of several towns and villages such as Ogobiri, Ikpidiama, Dagnnama, Tungbo, Ofoni, Elemebiri, Okumbiri, and Ekperiware. The estimated population of the LGA is put at 241,603 inhabitants with the LGA predominantly occupied by members of the Ijaw ethnic group. The Ijaw language is commonly spoken in the LGA while the religions of Christianity and traditionalism are extensively practiced in the area. Prominent traditional rulers in the LGA include the Amananowei of Agbere while the festivals held in the LGA include the Seigbein fishing and the Opuaduno Lake fishing festivals.

GEOGRAPHY OF SAGBAMA

Sagbama LGA covers a total area of 945 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 25 degrees centigrade. The LGA is heavily forested and hosts part of the Bayelsa National Forest. About 70 percent of the Sagbama LGA is covered with water with the LGA hosting several rivers and tributaries.

ECONOMY OF SAGBAMA

Sagbama LGA is a hub for fishing with the several rivers and tributaries that constitute the area’s water space being laden with seafood. Farming is also an important economic activity in Sagbama LGA with crops such as sugarcane, cassava, plantain, and banana grown in the LGA. Mineral resources found in Sagbama LGA include crude oil and natural gas.
