Umuahia South

Umuahia South local government area is in Abia state, South-east geopolitical zone of Nigeria. The headquarters of the LGA are in the town of Apumiri Ubakala and theLGA shares borders with the Umuahia North, Isiala Ngwa, and the Ikwuano LGAs. Towns and villages that make up Umuahia South LGA include Amankwo, Ekenobizi, Ngodo, Ahiaukwu, Nsirimo, Omaegwu, Ezeleke, Amakama, and Ubakala. The estimated population of Umuahia South LGA is put 183,590 inhabitants with the area majorly occupied by members of the Igbo ethnic group. The Igbo language is commonly spoken in the LGA while the religion of Christanity is widely practiced in the area. Festivals celebrated in Umuahia South LGA include the New Yam and the Ekpe Maquerade festivals.

Umuahia south LGA occupies a total area of 140 square kilometres and lies within the rainforest zone. The LGA is stationed off the banks of the Imo River and has an average wind speed of 11 km/h.

Umuahia South LGA has a vibrant trade sector with the area hosting a number of markets such as the Apumiri market where a variety of commodities are bought and sold. Farming also takes place in the LGA with crops such as yam, maize, and cassava grown in the area.
