Shongom local government area is one of the eleven LGAs found in Gombe state, North-east geopolitical zone of Nigeria. The headquarters of the LGA are in the town of Boh and the area comprises of several towns and villages which include Bangunji, Burak, Filiya, Gwandum, Shongom, Boh, Dongeja, and Lalaipido. The current estimated population of Shomgom LGA is put at 174,329 inhabitants with the area primarily populated by members of the Tangale ethnic group.The Tangale language is commonly spoken in the LGA while the religions of Christianity and Islam are extensively practiced in the area.
Shongom LGA occupies a total area of 922 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 31 degrees centigrade. The LGA witnesses two major seasons which are the rainy seasons which usually come between the months of May and September and the dry seasons which are normally witnessed between the months of October and April.
Trade is a critical economic activity in Shongom LG with the area hosting the expansive Lalaipido International Cattle market where a variety of domestic animals are sold. Farming also blossoms in Shongom LGA with the area known for the cultivation of a number of food crops such as beans, rice, sorghum, guineacorn, and millet. Other occupations of the people of Shongom LGA include hunting, wood carving, and animal rearing.
