The Benue State Polytechnic was originally known as the Murtala College of Arts, Science and Technology, established in 1977 by the military governor of Benue State, Colonel Abdullahi Shelleng (1976–1978).[2] In 1983, the college's Department of Agriculture of the College was merged with Akperan Orshi College of Agriculture. The school is approved as a state-owned polytechnic by the National Board for Technical Education. Benue State Polytechnic, Ugbokolo has seven (7) schools of learning, each of which is headed by a Dean. Each school is further divided into related academic departments that offer the required academic programmes of study.
Applicants seeking admission into a Diploma or Certificate programme in the polytechnic must be qualify for admission before the commencement of the session in which they wish to enter. Admissions into straight ND-NBTE courses are through the "Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB)". However, candidates for the PRE-ND and NON-NBTE Diploma programmes are admitted by the polytechnic directly.
