Hon. Gana Kareto attended Immaculate Heart Secondary School in Maiduguri, Borno State, where he obtained his Senior School Certificate. In 2000, he graduated with an advanced diploma in business management from the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi. Thereafter, he earned a Bachelor's degree in business management from the University of Maiduguri, Borno State, in 2006. In 2006, he obtained a Master's degree in business administration from the University of Maiduguri, Borno State.

In 2004, he served as a Caretaker Chairman of Mobbar Local Government Area of Borno State. In 2007, he was elected as a member of the Borno State House of Assembly. He held the position until 2011 when he was elected to represent Kukawa/Mobbar/Abadam/Guzamalai Federal Constituency at the Federal House of Representatives in Abuja. In 2015, he was re-elected for a second term under the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC).
