Hon Gwani attended Kaduna Capital School where he obtained the First School Leaving Certificate (FSLC) in 1976. He had his secondary education at Barewa College Zaria and graduated with a General Certificate of Education (GCE) in 1981. He proceeded to the Kaduna State Polytechnic where he obtained an Ordinary National Diploma (OND) in Architecture in 1986 and a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Architecture in 1987. He also attended the University of Jos, Plateau State where he studied architecture and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in 1992. He obtained a Master's degree from the Ahmadu Bello University Zaria in Architecture in 1995.

Prior to joining politics, Hon Gideon worked as an architecture and consultant. In 1999 he was elected to the Kaduna State House of Assembly where he also served as the Deputy Speaker until 2003.

In 2003 he was elected under the platform of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) to represent Kaura Federal Constituency at the National Assembly. He was re-elected in 2007, 2011 and 2015. He is a member of the following committees; aviation, FCT area councils & ancillary matters, Police affairs, local content, women in parliament, and urban development & regional planning. His legislative interest is in education and youth empowerment.
