Dunukofia

Dunukofia local government area is in Anambra state found within the Southeast geopolitical division of Nigeria. The headquarters of the LGA are domiciled in the town of Ukpo and is made up of several towns and villages which include Ifitedunu, Umudioka, Nawgu, Ukwulu, Ukpo, and Umunnachi. Dunukofia LGA shares boundaries with the Awka North, Oyi, Idemili North, and Njikoka local government areas. The population of Dunukofia LGA is put at 162,088 inhabitants with the vast majority of the area’s dwellers being members of the Igbo ethnic group. Christianity and traditional religion are widely practiced in Dunukofia LGA while the Igbo and English languages are widely spoken in the area.  A number of important festivals such as the Mkpukpa festival in Umudioka are held in Dunukofia while the Miss Dunukofia beauty pageant also holds in the area annually. Important landmarks in Dunukofia LGA include the General Hospitals in Ifitedunu and Ukpo and the St. Mary’s High school Ifitedunu.

GEOGRAPHY OF DUNUKOFIA

Dunukofia Lga witnesses two major seasons every year which are the rainy and the dry seasons. The average temperature of the area is put at 28 degrees centigrade while the total annual precipitation in the area averages 2950 mm of rainfall.

ECONOMY OF DUNUKOFIA

A number of crops such as yam, rice, cassava, and maize are grown in Dunukofia LGA with Farming being the major occupation of the people. Trade also blossoms in Dunukofia LGA with the area hosting a number of markets such as the Afor Igwe market in Umudioka.
