Idemili North

Idemili North local government area is in Anambra state, Southeast Nigeria and has its headquarters in the town of Ogidi. The towns and villages that make up Idemili North LGA include Umuoji, Abatete, Nkpor, Ideani, Eziowelle, Abacha, Oraukwu, and Ogidi. Idemili North LGA shares borders with Oyi, Dunukofia, Njikoka, Anaocha, Idemili, and Onitsha south LGAs. The estimated population of Idemili North LGA is 162,808 inhabitants with the vast majority of the area’s population consisting of members of the Igbo ethnic division. The Igbo and English languages are commonly spoken in the area while Christianity is the widely practiced religion in the area. Popular festivals held in Idemili North LGA include the Uzo-Iyi and the Imoka festivals while the LGA has a popular tradition that forbids its dwellers from killing any python snake found in the vicinity.

Idemili North LGA has a total area of 390 square kilometres and has the River Idemili flowing within its territory. The LGA witnesses two distinct seasons which are the rainy and the dry seasons with average temperature of the area put at 25 degrees centigrade. Idemili North LGA has an average humidity level of 69 percent with an average wind speed of 11 km/h.

Idemili North LGA is a trade hub with the area hosting several markets such as the Uke market and the Building materials market. Farming is also an important economic feature of Idemili North LGA with crops such as yam, cassava, cocoyam, and vegetables grown in the area. Other important economic enterprises engaged in by the people of Idemili North LGA include fishing, blacksmithing and craftsmanship.

Idemili North LGA was carved out of the old Idemili LGA in the year 1989.
