About Ohaukwu Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Ohaukwu local government area is situated within Ebonyi state, South-east geopolitical zone of Nigeria. The headquarters of the LGA are in the town of Izhiangbo and the LGA is made up of several towns and villages such as Ammofia Mgbo, Ezzamgbo, Umugudu, Umuogudu oshia, Okposi Eheku, Effium, Ekwashi Mgbo, and Okposi mgbo. The estimated population of Ohaukwu LGA is put at 174,980 inhabitants with the area mostly inhabited by members of the Igbo ethnic group. The Igbo language is commonly spoken in the area while the religions of Christianity and traditionalism are practiced in the LGA. A number of colourful festivals such as the Itukwe and Iphori Ndiegu festivals are held in Ohaukwu LGA while the notable landmarks in the area include the Ebonyi state University Campus.


GEOGRAPHY OF OHAUKWU

Ohaukwu LGA covers a total area of 517 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 28 degrees centigrade. The area witnesses two distinct seasons which are the dry and the rainy seasons while the average wind speed in the area is at an estimated 9 km/h.


ECONOMY OF OHAUKWU

Trade flourishes in Ohaukwu LGA with the area hosting several markets such as the Okwor Mgbo and the Eke Ichi Idokpo markets where a variety of commodities are bought and sold. Farming is also a critical part of the economy of Ohaukwu LGA with crops such as cassava, cocoyam, maize, rice, and vegetables grown in large quantities within the area. Other economic engagements of the people of Ohaukwu LGA include crafts making, animal rearing, and blacksmithing.

HISTORY OF OHAUKWU

Ohaukwu LGA was created in the year 1989 from the Ishielu LGA.
